DeLorme Releases Topo USA 5.0

As technology advances, topographic map users are increasingly demanding more definitive and up-to-date terrain and land-cover detail. DeLorme, the market leader in consumer mapping software, is now meeting that demand with high-resolution aerial images through its latest release of Topo USA.

New with Version 5.0, registered users can download multi-layered Aerial Data Packets (ADPs), which include both aerial photos and satellite images. These highly useful data packets also include authentic US Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5 minute topographic map images.

The most up-to-date data, on DVD or CD-ROM

Topo USA 5.0 has the most up-to-date terrain, road, and trail data available. It’s the only topographic software that combines full nationwide coverage with automatic road and trail routing. And, you can get the entire program on one DVD-ROM, thus eliminating the need to switch discs (a six-CD national set is also available).

This newest version also includes improved GPS functions, nationwide campgrounds, and the ability to link photos, documents, and websites to the maps.

The new Aerial Data Packets represent a genuine advance for Topo USA users. ADPs can be fully integrated with the existing map data, using DeLorme’s user-friendly split-screen feature. This allows users to compare the images, obtain an immediate visual context for any location, and perform quick, easy editing.

Discover what’s actually there

For example, the aerial images clearly show man-made structures and agricultural land, and allow users to differentiate between sparse, dense, or clear-cut forest areas, which would be indistinguishable on traditional maps.

If you want to show a farm field, orchard, or clear-cut, simply use the versatile draw tools to trace its position on the aerial photo or satellite image; the resulting polygon appears on the map in its precise position. Insert a text label or map note, and you’ve added a valuable new layer of detail to your map.

Structures or other points of interest also can be located and labeled…anything from urban arenas to remote cabins.

Use Aerial Data Packets to update roads and trails

If the ADPs show a road or trail that doesn’t appear on the map, simply select the correct line symbol from the draw tools and trace the feature on the ADP image. It will automatically appear on the map with full positional accuracy. These user-added roads or trails are fully routable—an exclusive DeLorme feature that lets users keep up with the never-ending process of new road and trail building, with absolutely no loss in routing capabilities.

Any registered user will be able to download $50 worth of ADPs at no charge. The free ADPs are an exceptional value, comprising more than 12,000 acres. Additional ADPs can be downloaded for just $1 per square kilometer (min. $25 purchase).

GPS features help you get the most out of your receiver

Every outdoor adventure is a source for new map data. If you discover a just-built logging road, a recent Rails-to-Trails project, or if you want to show your bushwhack trails, simply collect a GPS track file and you can download it as a fully routable road or trail. Save it, and it’s there when you need it next time out.

Topo USA also offers a GPS Waypoint Wizard for fast, easy uploads and downloads. You can use Topo USA with all popular brands of receivers, as long as they are NMEA-compliant.

Over 74,500 miles of trail updates

Trails have been updated within 50 national parks and national forests. The updated data amounts to 74,553 miles total. Altogether, the program includes more than 300,000 miles of trails nationwide. In addition, users can now download commercial campground locations from coast to coast.

Topo USA retains its many other popular features, including DeLorme’s exclusive routing capabilities. Users can automatically route their drive from home to trailhead, and their hike from trailhead to backcountry destination. The program will instantly select the optimal driving and hiking routes and provide GPS waypoints for uploads to receivers.

The roads in Topo USA 5.0 come from the DeLorme Street Atlas USA® 2004 database, which is unrivaled for its up-to-date accuracy. It includes everything from superhighways to the remote back roads essential for wilderness access.

Distinctive 3-D terrain views

DeLorme pioneered the use of 3-D map images with earlier versions of Topo USA and continues to improve the realism of these breathtaking displays with Version 5.0. 3-D is an advance beyond shaded relief (which Topo USA also offers), and vastly enhances the ability to accurately preview any destination. Users can scout the terrain in its actual form, from any compass point, and from viewing angles ranging from vertical to near horizontal. A new option allows users to select any location and get a 360-degree view of the terrain from that spot.

The Topo USA profile feature is another indispensable scouting tool. Simply right click on any route, trail, road, or other linear features — even streams — and instantly see a “cutaway” elevation profile for that feature. Determine elevation gain or loss, and gauge the degree of difficulty, to fully prepare for any backcountry adventure.

Other popular features include searchable draw objects; UTM or latitude/longitude coordinates; and flexible print options, including a wide range of print scales, handy layout tools, and mural printing (2 x 2 or 3 x 3 mosaics), on either 8_” x 11” or 11” x 17” printers.

Look forTopo USA 5.0 wherever software, maps, or outdoor recreation equipment are sold. The program performs optimally on PCs with a 600 MHz or higher processor, with minimum 256 MB of random access memory (RAM).
