OK...here's a an old annoying problem that I've had for a little while. I've asked about it before (on other boards) and no one seems to know anything about it.

From the day I drove my XJ of the lot in '97, it had this feature where at dusk the headlights would come on automatically. Well for a couple of years now the headlights are on all the time...I figure that there is a photoelectric cell somewhere that detects ambient light...problem is the FSM has no reference to it.

Anyone know where the stupid sensor might be so I can clean the crap/crud out that is most likely causing the problem?

Rock On!

Steve

Check your dash board.. Close to the windshield.. It will just be a small hole..
If its not there.. Check the back of your rear view mirror..

Good luck..

Cool. I know it's not the rear view cause it's just a standard mirror...no electric or wires. I'll check the dash in the morning...see if I can find it.

Thanks!

Rock On!

OK, I've looked for this thing a couple of times...the most thorough check was yesterday when I washed the Jeep. I don't see hyde nor hair of this thing on the dash or rearview.

Any other ideas?

Well, I finally figured it out. It seems that the alarm system actually added the headlight automation feature...who knew?

I discovered this 'cause I (quite accidently mind you) came across the owners manual for the alarm, which is a Clifford Intelliguard 900IQ. Clifford calls the feature "Night Vision". I had the alarm installed about an hour after I took delivery of the Jeep, so I just assumed that the automation was from the factory. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I found the sensor, cleaned it and even moved it out to where it can get more light, but it did not totally solve the problem. So I disabled the feature until I can get a new sensor in there.

Rock On!
