Is it a 97? If so, this is the best I've found. And yes, you turn the key on and off three times. http://www.dirtroad.com/codes.htm
If it's newer than 97, I think it's changed, but I'm not positive.

Nah, you can still use the on/off method with the ignition, it works on my 02 TJ...

Once you get the codes use this list to cross referrence them:

Yeah it's a 97. Thanks I'll try to check tonight now that I have the codes. You know it's my luck that I replace my soft top and my check engine light pops on. Maybe I should re-install my old one to see if it corrects the problem Wink Rolling Eyes Very Happy

If turning the key however many times dosent work then try and, if it is a standard trans with you foot off the clutch, hold in the tipometer button and at the same time, turn the key to the start position as if you were trying to start it, hold it there for like 5 sec or untill the gauges dance all over the place. then let go and watch the show. At the end of the dance it will display a code for you, i am not sure this will work for a 97 TJ, but i know it works on my 2000 TJ. Good luck and hope you figure out the problem.
