I got my truck very muddy the last time I went to NM. On the way back, the engine leaked about 4 quarts of oil in 800 miles. The oil was on everything on the passenger side so it was difficult to pinpoint where it was coming from. I cleaned everything up (the mud and oil), added dye, and I've run it for about an hour with no signs of a leak. Short of pulling the head, I've checked everything I can think of - freeze plugs, high pressure oil pump, water seperator, etc. Any ideas why it would leak that much and then stop?

Don't you have a diesel truck?Seems if it leaked that much, it'd have to be under pressure. Check the oil filter (and filter cooler?) to make sure they are tight (can't just hand tighten the filter on a diesel).

Yeah, it's a F250 with the 7.3L. It was definitely coming from the top of the engine - the oil filter was good. In the past, I blew a freeze plug. It leaked in a similar area but a lot more. I think the next move will be to check the oil galley plugs. I was hoping it was only the o-ring on the HPOP but no such luck.
