Hello All

I suspect I have a problem with the rear differential
Anyone have input on a fix or an idea of what the problem may be?

Description
Noise most noticeable in parking lots: whining, binding, grinding, friction.
Shuddering in slow turns, especially in U turns.
Metal shavings stuck to magnet on cover plate of differential.

What I've Found Out
From the post Iíve read, it may be a Vicous Coupler. I donít know what this is. My knowledge of repairs: brakes, alternators, radiators, fuel pumps, shocks, drives shafts, ect.

Question
Is a Vicous Coupler a complex job?

I've also read it may be bearings.
Question
Is there a bearing where axle meets differential?
Are these the bearings behind the brake backing plate?

Info appreciated and desperately needed.

I would think this is your gears! Looks like you double posted this, no sweat, but I'm gonna remove the one from the grand cherokee section, you'll get plenty of exposure here in general tech or in drivetrain...

Also, have you ever regeared your axles? Or do you have the stock setup? How often do you change your differential fluid? Good luck!

I've never re-geared the diff., all stock setup and only 43,000 on this Cherokee. I was 10,000 miles late changing the diff. fluid but it was certainly full.

As I continue to research this issue, suggestions are leaning towards the Vicous Coupler being that the vehicle shudders in hard turns. I wonder what the complexity of this job is.

Ill tell you exactly what it is I just did this with my 2000 XJ
Your Trac Lock(limited slip)proably taken a dump on you!
WHY? Probably by not adding the friction modifier required in Limited slips...
did you change the gear oil yourself? if not and maybe if you did they/you might not have put the additive in!!!!!

My suggestion? Go to your nearest MOPAR dealer and buy the Limited slip additive(yes other places sell the stuff, but Dealership is what I recommend and Ive only used) Replace the gear oil one more time! try some Mobil 1 80-90 wt this time and add the bottle of Juice... and call me in the morning... if it still does it then your Trac lock has deffinatly dumped on you
Next option? buying a new Limited slip or a Locker! Mr. Green
please let me know if you need more info ! Im full of it!

Thanks for the reply.
I did infact add the friction modifier that came from a local Jeep dealer.
