I know I'm going to catch some flack for this but I want to take my carbureted 232 out of my
'81 CJ-5 and put in a 2.5 L. Reasons:
My CJ-5 is my daily driver and always will be
The 232 gets about 15 mpg and it's killing me
The 232 has no emissions stuff and I'm going to need it soon
What would I need to do to swap in a 2.5 plus a five speed? Note: I'm not interested in
upgrading to a 4.0 unless there's a way to get 25 mpg. That's why I want a five-speed
behind the 2.5L. |

Sorry to break your bubble, but I highly doubt you'll see 25mpg out of the 2.5 either. You're driving a brick on wheels. The 2.5L doesn't get 25mpg in a YJ or TJ. If you're getting 15mpg out of a CJ, be happy. _________________ 04 Unlimited |

I'm getting nearly 20 out of my 258 in my 81 cj5 (highway) in town it drops to about 12
but I'm not mpg anal so I just don't care what I get ('I don't mean to sound like an a$$)
if I was worried about milage I'd drive a moped _________________ lets run meet death, before he comes looking for us |

also is this 2.5 carbed or injected
if injected you will need the computer and all the wires out of the donor ,and a fuel pump for injection , sensers
it's not real ez to convert to injection ,not imposable ,just not real ez _________________ lets run meet death, before he comes looking for us |

Having owned both a 2.5L and a 4.0L, there hasn't been that much of a difference in mileage. I guess what I'm saying is that if you're going to the trouble of swapping, you might want to look at an I-6. If you're still interested in the 4 banger, I'd consider looking at the 2.4. It's the same engine (with some tweaks) used in the PT Cruisers and the Neon SRT (with a turbo). The PT engines are rated at between 19/29 MPG. HTH _________________ Nothing to see here. |

Thanks for info., everyone. I'm getting the same response from other sites, i.e., "don't be stupid." Thinking about switching to diesel or maybe going w/ a 4.0 w/ a 5-speed behind it. |

A 4.0L or small turbo diesel would be kickass. Mate that up with an NV4500 for a rock solid combo. _________________ 04 Unlimited |
