I have a '96 Jeep Cherokee 4WD 4.0 litre and need to change the oil seal on the driver's side front drive axle. This seal is changed from inside the front differential, and the ring gear has to be removed to gain access to the seal.
Have any of you done this? I need advice on how to remove the ring gear. For example, do both axles have to be pulled, or will the ring gear come out after removing the four bolts (two on each side) near where the axle splines are, do all of the bolts on the ring gear need to be removed, etc.
Thank you!

Remove both front tires, remove both front brake calipers, remove both front brake rotors. Look around the back of the steering knuckle, see those 3 bolts with 12-point heads, remove them. You'll need a 12-point socket, I think they're 12 or 13mm. You'll also need some leverage, they're tough bastards. Get a nice hammer and tap the entire shaft and hub out from the knuckle. You might as well remove the entire shaft, it'll probably make it easier to remove and replace the inner seals.

You dont have to mess with the shims or anything on the diff.. Just unbolt the 4 bolts that hold the diff in and pull it out the seals are right there..

If you have any problem with the diff not coming out wedge it in place and turn the pinion nut it will pop right out...

Post here if you have any problems or questions..
