TJ 97 4.O L Sahara
randomly the gauges go on and off (mostly off) and airbag light is on.
Already tried the following:
1-Replaced instrument cluster: no improvement.
2-replaced the instrument cluster connectors.
3-checked the grounds.Re-screwed according the tech bull.

Now I really don't know what to try else...the jeep service dealer is getting crazy!

Any other idea???

I read somewhere about two days ago on the web that 97 have this problem. Im not sure if it was a recall but its due to a bad ground.

Bad ground behind the dash. You can remove it and ix it, or just bang on the dash. I bang on the dash quicker fix. If you remove the dash, you just need to connect the ground better. Seriously banging the top of the dash, right above the instrument cluster works

posting to an older post: I started having the same problem a couple months back intermittently, eventually the cluster dumped out on me. Replaced it, the connectors and created a new ground to no avail. Anyone have a better idea? Dealer doesn't know what the heck is going on either.

When it stops working, smack the top of the dash. It'll start working again.

It's a known issue with the early TJs...mostly 97s (don't recall hearing anyone with a 98 have that problem).

strange...... when I have problems like that If I find it's time for a new mod. How about a custom dash???

Do you have a code reader? That will help to see if there's a real error.

IF you have a FSM I would start to trace back you are lucky that that you have two problems that will help isolate the problem. You know the problem is at or below the junction of the Air bags and gauges. Sounds like a bad ground or even a hot lead. I believe the Air bags light goes on when there is a break in the circuit.

I have a 2002 Jeep...not sure what a custom dash would look like...any ideas? I have thought about it but have noidea how to start building/creating one. What's an FSM? would the code reader you mention tell me where the break is or how specific is that thing?

A couple of years ago a saw a write-up for a nice looking custom TJ dash, but now I'm not finding it. Confused
There was a lot of wiring that needed to be converted to get it to work - I'll keep searching for it. The FSM is a factory service manual - basically the mother of all manuals. SOmetimes you can find them online, you can find them on Ebay or you can buy them from the stealership. Wherever you get it, it'll be one of the best investments you make. Wink
