Here's what I'm running now. Factory issued TJ D30. I added 4.56's and a NoSlip lunchbox. I've replaced the OEM draglink and tie rod with a Rusty's setup and really don't wanna replace this. Eventually, I'd like to add a Super30 kit to it. I don't plan nor need on swapping in a D60 or 9" or whatever up front because I'm running 35's now and don't really plan on going any bigger than this plus I really don't feel like spending that much more for another axle that's just gonna be overkill for my needs. So, I've basically settled on the S30 kit for my front. This'll upgrade from 27 to 30 spline, 35% stronger shafts, and an ARB, but still leave me with a weak ring gear and a low pinion axle. So, why not toss the S30 kit into a HP D30 outta a non disconnect XJ and get reverse cut gears and high pinion to boot? Additional expenses would be the cost of the used housing and a new set of gears for the front, but this would be more than offset by the sale of the current axle (already geared with a locker). Labor wouldn't change since the gears would have to be set up to the new carrier anyway. Seems like the only extra PITA is the extra time it'd take me to swap out the axles. Seem crazy to anyone?

Oh yeah, the possible charge to have the front driveshaft shortened if need be, but that shouldn't be too much.

If you will be staying with the 5 on 4.5" lugs and will never go to 5 on 5.5" or 6 on 5.5" etc., go with the HP Dana 30 unless of course you will be doing manual hubs. Then I would go with a HP dana 44. I am going with a HP dana 44 because I can run 5 on 5.5", 6 on 5.5" etc., it already has manual hubs and so on. I got my HP dana 44 with chevy brakes(a lot bigger then dana 30 brakes), manual hubs, cut down for waggy axles already and flat tops for $400.00.

So if you don't want manual hubs and are going to stay with 5 on 4.5" lugs then go with the HP dana 30.

Yep, keeping the smaller bolt pattern and no hub conversions in the future for me. Running Canyons and spacers and wanna (kinda have to) keep that setup due to backspacing reasons in PA.

What's wrong with manual hubs and 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern?

I did the HP swap on mine.. I was very pleased with the difference.
The hp axle will raise the drive shaft about 5 inches . It didnt require a shorter shaft on mine..But it did make it possible for me to lift 3 more inches without extending my stock shaft.. Which was good enough for me..

Just so you know.. With 2.5 (Suposedly 3" ) of lift.. When I put the HP axle in my drive was just a little high of complete horizontal... Shocked
I was amazed because even stock my angle wasnt that good...

It is well worth it and the XJ 30 should be a direct bolt in...
I got mine without any brackets so I had to weld on all my own... That sucked..

ON a side note... I believe Locked up is selling his front HP 30..

I will ask him if you want.. Or I could send him here to post it..
Carl

Yeah, post or get him to post some details. Know what gears he's running? Is he just swapping it out because of the spring swap?

currie sells a kit for the upper control arm mounts... Passenger side is a solid piece to fit in and stregthen the mount ... it's got a Jonny Joint instead of the stock style bushing... oh -and a JJ to press into the driver side upper too...

I plan on checkin it out once my bushings take a shit... but if I were putting a hp30 together -i'd do it right away...

Finally just checked out his site, got 4.56's and a Lockrite listed for the front. Damn, that'd be bolt in a go Mr. Green ...well, except for the possible driveshaft length issue Wink .

My first post here, seems like a pretty knowledgeable forum and way-unlike JU. Think I'll like it here. Smile

Good thoughts on the HP XJ D30 'Drack, it's a great swap and it will be my next "major" mod since installing the Warn hubs and Warn inner/outer shafts up front. I wouldn't bother going to a HP D44 since the Dana 44 uses the same 297 u-joints as the Dana 30 does and they're the weak point, not the R&P gears. Now if you installed some ultra-beefy u-joints like CTM or Ox, that might make going to a HP D44 a good idea but now you're talking an additional $360 or so for the u-joints alone!

Yeah, that's why I never considered a HP44 swap, not worth the cash from my perspective. I'm not going bigger than 35's and like crawling rather than throttling my way thru the trail, so I think this'll be more than adequate for my needs. I figure if I've been planning on the S30 swap for my current 30 (wanna get an ARB up there, so the upgrade in spline count and better shafts might as well happen then too), why not just add the $100 or so for a XJ housing since I'm fairly confident I'll recoup that by selling my leftover 30 with 4.56's and a NoSlip in it .

Anyone know if I'm correct in understanding the S44 kit is only available with a Detroit? I'm looking ARB on that end too, but heard it isn't available yet. I'm not buying tomorrow, so it isn't that critical, but if the project's been shelved, I need to come up with a contigency plan Wink .
