First off, nice to be on board! Swampy, gotta tell you, I've been a ZJ owner modifying my Grand for about 2.5 years now. Throught the years, I've searched hi and low for detailed info on modifications and tech help and at the least, your 249-242 swap is by far, some of the most detailed and informative I've seen so far.... thank you very much!

That said, I have a 1998 5.2 with the 249... I notice that your write-up is for an early model conversion, and knowing the late model stuff is different, I'm looking for some details for my late model 249-242 swap. If anyone can help, I need the following info:

#1 Is there a 242 year with an input shaft that will directly mate with my 44RE, trying to avoid new input shaft purchase.
#2 Are there any front drive shaft issues I need to be aware of???? Length? Joints? After the x-fer case, I'm going to look for a HP30
#3 Speedometer sensor issues?
#4 Any part numbers/issues for/with the center console bezel?

The 242 (Select-Trac) also has Full-time 4WD, does this mean that it also has a VC?

I'll be doing an HP30 not too far down the road.

Anything I need to look out for???? Like everyone else, I have no budget so I need to do stuff as inexpensively as possible!

TIA,
Mark

The only way you will find a 242 with the proper input for a 5.2 is to get one out of a 5.2.... (Very hard find..) If you are getting a boneyard XJ 242 Like I did.. You will have to change the input.. Its not that hard..
The speedo sensor out of your 249 will drop into the 242 and work.. (If you have changed your tire size you might want to do some research and buy the new gear while you are at it. Its about $12 at the dealer)
I took the bezel out of the same vehichle I got my 242 out of..
(It did not snap in like I had hoped so I glued it to the old one it kind of sits on top.. But it looks fine.. I stripped all the old markings off the stock one so that the light would shine thru.. It looks good..)

There is no VC on the 242 it is a gear driven full time so no worries with that...

Thanks alot for the compliments. I worked hard on the write up because all the write ups I had to use to do mine sucked.. Very Happy So I figured I would make it easier for the next guy..

Glad to have you aboard.. Hope you enjoy it here ..
We try hard to make this a great forum..

Let me know if you have any other questions.. And if you decide to do it.. and you need any help My cell phone number is 504-382-0708 It is on 24 hours a day for Fellow Jeepers.. Mr. Green

From what I've read about the 249/242 swap is there was a gear pitch change in 94/95 (think that's right) so with your 98, you'd have to find a 95+ 242, if you are going to use your input shaft.

Think that's all right.

THat is true.. The imput will fit but it may make noise and may wear
out quickly.. You have to get a t-case that is newer than 94..

And George.. Is at Transfercasesunlimited.com he is in New York somewhere...

Good luck..

Carl

I may have screwed myself what do you think? The I bought was out af an 88XJ, and I want to put it into my 96ZJ. Did I buy the wrong one? I am told that the it will require the use of my 249 input shaft, but there was a change to the input shafts in 94/95 and my 249 input shaft may not work on the 242 I bought.

Any input would be great. I think I may have gotten over zelous in buying the 242, it was just a GREAT price and I did not do enough research, I just hope I can still use this thing.

Thanks for the input guys.

You have a 4.0 .. Assuming the 242 you bought came out of a 4.0 you
dont need to change the input.. Just bolt it up..
The only reason you need to change the input is if it is different.. (Ie I6 to VCool
Pull your 249 and compare the input to the 242.. I bet its the same..

Good luck..

Should work perfectly without worrying about the input..

Worst case scenario.. I think I have a sun gear out of a 99 TJ 231..
It should work..

Let me know if you need it...
