I took my jeep in for regular maintenance, just over 12,000 miles. The mechanic said the back cylinders were severly rusted/corroded, needed replaced. I thought that was under "warruntee" but the machanic said no. After I went home and found my booklet, it stated under not covered under brakes: lining, pads, boots etc. did not mention anything about cylinders. So I went to speak with the service manager. He contradicted what the mechanic said, said that it was normal for rust, not to be concerned.

What's the deal?

find another mechanic......maybe one thats not smoking crack or trying to rip you off.

Brake cylinders do get rusty.......you should see what they look like up here in snow country from the road salts. Its normal.

Rust is normal. They're uncoated metal...rust will happen. Take a look at them yourself if you know how to get the brakes apart. You're looking for brake fluid leaking out of the cylinders. If there's nothing like that, your brake cylinders are fine and the mechanics trying to make business for himself.
