Yes.. But your rear shaft will be about 1 1/2" to long.. Its the same as the 242 swap except for the case is longer..

I am currently running a 231D in mine...

i fit the 231 in by lifting the case with the floor jack and and putting it in place
after it was in it leaked tranny fluid real bad
didn't switch input gear so it didn't seat itself inside inside the seal.
with the longer input shaft will i not be able to fit the stock driveshaft.
so the input gear out of the 249 will work in the 231

when i put the 231 in the drive shaft was a little tight but i got it in. could this cause any problems.
will i not be able to fit the drive shaft in with the new input

the planetary gear on the 231 are pointed and the ones on the 249 are flat at the very top
when i spin the 249 in the 231 track it causes it to bind and clunk

IF your shaft is to tight it could crack your case on compression.. You need at least 1" of up travel on the shaft.. If you dont have that you have to be very carefull on compression... Use a floor jack and lift the axle slowly and see how it does..

where can i get a new drive shaft, how long of a drive shaft do you think i need, and about how much do you think it will cost
the bearing in the 231 input hole is about 3/8" deeper than the 249 is
it causes it to sit too deep and bind
can the bearings be swapped
i also need help with the gear problem

thanks a lot for helping me with all of this b.s.

The imput is not that hard to swap.. Hit me with an email if you have any questions...

My primary email is ..
Carbar42@bellsouth.net

Carl

Oh.. any drive shaft shop (or 4wd shop) can shorten your shaft. Mr. Green
Drive it to them in 4wd. (on front shaft only.) and let them measure so that the shaft is the right length...

Good luck..

Carl

YIkes... Are you sure you put it back together right....
Its a pretty simple case ... But this might be better answered by TJ Guys.. Since they are all equiped with the 231...

Grinding when shifting is not that big a deal.. Maybe bad syncros or out of sync(sp) but the howling and tinging has me worried...

IF you would like I can ask around and see what others say...

Carl

Here's specs and info for the 231 and here's a little bit of info on the 242. I'll see if I can dig up some more for you.
