I'm looking for a quality welder's helmet at a reasonable price. I'd like an auto darkening one. Any suggestions? Carl? Mr. Green

Those have come way down over the last 12-15 years or so. Way back I remember Snap-On selling them for $2500.00. A friend of mine bought one and refused to use it, cause he didnt want to break it. rofl

Since then they have come way down. Before I got into the HVAC line of work I ran hardware stores for many years. At the last store I worked at I sold Forney Industries welding accesories. I was selling there Chinese made one at retail at $129.99. That was a complete helmet, and they worked just fine for a cheapy. Not for the working pro welder by any means, but still decent for the shade tree welder. The downside to the cheap ones are the veiw port is small at 1" x 4" where your regular small lense is 2"x4" and its an econo helmet so no frills. I have used one and would buy one in a second if I ever got back into welding again. Forney dosent sell direct from there site, but they will let you know what the closet dealers are. A while back Forney got involved with Ace and True Value hardware, so maybe even the local stores may carrry them or can get them out of thier catalog.

From there for something with a larger veiw port or just better overall quality then your into the starting point of @$400+ and go from there.

If you have them out your way also try Airgas or Merriam-Graves. They both have a good assortment of helmets.

after welding for 3 years in a factory I found out I don't like auto shealds

and my helmut of choice is the lincoln helmuts, best with a gold iradiated lens , I use a no. 10 lens for tig welding and a no. 9 for mig

the reason I don't like autos is I can't stand to have my face behind the shield for any length of time , the air just gets too stale for me
also I could out weld any one there at work that had auto shields with my normal lens , plus it gave a bigger veiw than most autos

and best of all is only $20.00

just my .02

I've had no issues with the HF one, unlike my brother's expensive auto hood. In fact he seems to be using it lately instead of the many other helmets lying around the shop. I don't do a lot of welding, but I did use it tonight. Cool
