i wanted to put in a 242, but with the plans i have for my 318, i dont think it'll hold up well. are there any stronger TC's i coudl put in that have a 2 wheel drive, part, and full time 4 wheel drive selection?

so you knwo how sttrong i need it, im plan ning on having a full exhaust, 3" cat and 3" catback, FIPK, mopar ECU, torquey cam w/ 1.6 RR's, M1 intake, 50mm TB, and eventually ported heads.

Think the only ones that have what you want are newer... think there are some like what come in Dodges or Hummers that would work.
There are plenty that are older - 2wd, 4 hi - 4 lo (both part time)

242 will hold up to 318 with some mods as long as you are not super hard on it... I ran one for a while.... But.............. I WAS super hard on it... Very Happy

What I did was bought a 231J(Jeep) and a 231D(Dodge) and used the bigger chain and sprockets from the 231 D in the 231 J case... (231D case is about 6" longer..so it messed up my drive shaft angle..Hence the change) The result is a super strong case that is very easy to work on or find parts for...
A standard 231 will hold up to the 5.2 as well.. No problems.. But LIke I said... I am pretty hard on my stuff...

Look in the tech section for a writeup on 242 swap... It works exactly the same for a 231..

i beat the piss out of my ZJ, so im nto sure a 242 will hold, and im nto a fan of the all-or-nothing-ness of the 231 (aka 2wd or 4 part time)

I have heard of others who use the 242 with good results...
They are pretty strong and just so you know .. Mine only died because I broke a rear shaft and hashed the seal and didnt know it.. SO when I changed U joint and went at it again. I sucked water into the case.. And It went south... Before that it worked fine... I would have just put another 242 in but I found a 231D for $100 (Junkyard find of the year. Very Happy ) SO I went with it...

I would suggest getting a 242 and rebuilding it... IE new Chain and sprockets and make sure you buy the seals from Jeep.. (autoparts stores dont seem to have the right seal...)
And then make yourself a drive shaft loop.. That might save your seal if you break a joint.. Thats what I am working on now.... Mr. Green

I dont know of any other cases that offer full time ... Maybe one of those borg warner cases out of an Explorer... Not really sure..

Let me know if you find something...

Oh yeah.. I can ask a buddy of mine who has a Sploder that I did a solid axle swap on last year..He knows all the ford stuff...

Ill let you know..

Carl

Carl, I have trouble believing you've been within a mile of that exploder - it's not missing 80% of its sheet metal. flipoff agree
