I plan to upgrade the radio in my 97. I would like to get a Pioneer and put it in. My question is, mine has the steering wheel controls, will they still work? My wife likes being able to use them.

Hmm....I'm going to say no. I would imagine there's probably some harness that attaches to the stock radio that will not have any way to adapt to the Pioneer head unit. Depending on the head unit you buy, it may or may not have a remote that you attach to the steering wheel. I know they used to make them, but I haven't looked around for one lately.

There should be an adapter harness made, but I remember them running $100+.

Well the bad news is I can't get rid of the airbag. I'm in Pa and have to pass state inspection once a year. That also means any axle upgrades have to retain abs. I am not concerned with the cost if it is a once and done deal.

Mighty - Check with a premier auto radio shop and see if they have a brand name of adapter. Sometimes places like BestBuy or Circuit City won't have them. What you are looking for is a Blitz-Safe, SoundGATE or PIE adapter. They all 3 make steering wheel controls for just about everything. Pioneer is super friendly when it comes to adapting over. They actually hook up straight to GM and Ford stuff. Any troubles let me know!!

Not to hijack, but here's some info on adapting the 8.8 ABS if that's the route you go. Resume the thread. Wink

FYI,

there are several aftermaket adapters that will allow the use of steering wheel controls. My preference, the PAC(Brand) SWIX(model), it's a universal unit that will work with any headunit that has remote control ability(the hand held kind), and works with about any vehicle, see it's application list. I do know that it WILL work with a '96 and newer.

I noticed you are in Hanover PA, check out WeeBee Audio in Lancaster.
