I am onto my second Jeep now (first one being a Wrangler - which I was totally happy with).

My latest Jeep has caused nothing but headaches. In the first six months of owning it was in the shop over 12 times.

One of my biggest concerns is the transmission.
- When changing down gears, it will sometimes "clunks" instead of changing down smoothly.
- Put in "R" one day and the Jeep went forward.
- Lack of power when pulling a boat up a hill. Transmission is always changing down and up gears.
- Jeep shudders when reversing up a gradient.
- Ticking / winding sound from middle console when coming to a halt.

Jeep New Zealand advise these are characteristics of this model. Anyone else having transmission problems?

Sad

The rest of your complaints sound like problems. But this one doesn't surprise me. The auto tranny in Jeeps can't ever seem to make up it's mind with what gear it wants to be in when towing. One suggestion is to turn off overdrive while towing. You may already be doing this, but if not, it should help some.

The ticking/winding sound you are hearing is actually normal for all Chrysler automatic trannies. Its just the shift solenoids downshifting when you come to a stop. My mom's 03 Liberty Freedom Edition makes the same noise and so do virtually all other Chrysler automatic trannies i've heard from the late 80's up.

hmm...clunking, shuddering, gearshift problems...it sounds like something is loose...tranny mount maybe?

To echo on what E said, most owners manuals will tell not to have an auto tranny in overdrive when towing. It can cause the tranny to overheat. I usually keep the auto in my XJ in 3rd when towing/hauling stuff.
