Q?
does any one out there have a estimate number on the most miles that have been put on the 4.0. Mine is at 225 K + change. I add less than a 1/2 a quart to keep the level between every oil change (about every 3000 miles), still runnig very strong. no complaints here.. haven't fix anything major, just the normal wear and tear, and a craked exhaust manifold.(hasn't every body?)

Any one over 300 K, and, still kicking hard on the rocks?

Just to see how far can we go on this excelent motor.
have a good one
rick..

I've seen a few folks over on NAXJA who put 350 to 400K on thier 4.0's prior to them needing a teardown. If you've taken care of it (which it sounds like you have), there's no reason why yours wouldn't go that far.

No worries, we all started out with less than 0 knowledge at some point. We learned you will too. Don't worry about it...the more you wrench the XJ the more you'll learn. Wink

They are a good bunch of folks over at NAXJA. But I can see how someone new to "Jeep-ese" and "XJ Speak" might be intimidated.

Any questions you have feel free to post them here. Someone will either know or will get you an answer 99.9% of the time (we do get stumped occasionally). You can also check out "XJ Stock Specs" and "XJ Tech Writeup" threads. Lots of good info there.

Also check out Links4Jeeps. There's TONS of writeups listed in the database and the board is newb friendly. I'm a mod over there as well.

Rock On!

Steve

96 Sport model 198,000 from new. 2 water pumps 1 oil pressure sender 1 crank position sensor 1 plastic valve thingy and currently needing an air conditioning vacuum canister. 5 sets of tyres 2 sets of discs 4 new shockies 4 timing belts and to my astonishment only 1 bulb! That was the brake light last week, amazingly tight vehicle. Carrying a small rear crankshaft seal leak for the past 6 years and it still hasn't gotten any worse. Have the engine flushed and oil done every 3000 ( high temperature here in Dubai 130 in the summer) Chassis lubed at the same time and gearbox and diff oils done every 30,000 whether it needs it or not. Slightly notchy second gear coming down the box and passenger side window a bit sluggish (electric). Interior reading lights (not courtesy) went 2 years ago but I never used them so f*@# 'em????? Replaced tail gate struts 4 years ago and still strong. Drivers side over mat has hole worn through to the rubber but not paying $120 for new set of 4. Headlining replaced last year after glue finally gave up the ghost and was impeading rear view, great job done for $250 including re-trim of drivers seat skirt in leather. Passenger side doors re-skinned after some granny reversed her land rover into me whilst I was stationary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! some blind spot they must have eh? Phew I think that's it.............no wait a minute 1 resisitor pack for blower fan and 5 batteries...................I'm done.

You've got either a great memory or some darn good records. Wink
Sounds like you've had some pretty good luck.

Man... I think he must have it all in a file cabinet er' something.... Thereís no way I could remember all that !!

The only thing I have had to do to mine is fix the stupid windows. The driverís side wouldn't go up and down at all when I got it and now the pass side is shot. I am getting ready to do a tune up on it though, change plugs and clean out TB. Of course mine has only 90,000 on it. I hope to get as much as I can out of it before I have to do anything major to it.

Has anybody heard any horror stories about XJ's and their brake systems? I have talked to two people who had trouble with theirs and my friend Carrie had hers go out completely while she was driving! Any one?

Hoping I will stop okay..... CoreyXJ

Corey - I have heard stories about XJ brakes, but mainly those problems were caused by either neglect or by shoddy service (usually by a dealer...shocker there).

Just take care of 'em...you be a'ight.

My 92 Cherokee Laredo has 320,000 km. on it and seems to have more power than my wife's brand new 04 Liberty 3.7. I'ver never had any major work done on it but I do change the oil every 5,000 km. I did have the tranny rebuilt at 250,000 km.

I pull 4800 pounds of Komfort travel trailer behind it for a couple thousand km. every year and it still hauls almost like new.

The way this engine has performed has me convinced to buy a new Rubicon with the 4.0 next year.
