Subject stock vehicle is a 2004 TJ X series with a D30 front/D35 rear, 3.07 gears, 29" tires. As far as I can tell the gear to rpm ratio charts are pointing us to a 4.56 gear set to keep the rpm's within optimal levels while running 33's. Can we do an upgrade to 4.56 in the stock setup. I ask this because of the following:

When replacing 3.54 and numerically
lower ratio gear sets with a 3.73
or higher gear, the case must be
changed to a 3.73 and higher case.

What does it mean "the case must be changed," can we do it and what do we need to get? Thanks.

Dale

You need new carriers to swap from 3.07s to 4.56s.

My recommendation would be, at a minimum, add in front and rear TruTracs (a gear based limited slip) and you can gain a traction aiding differential and get the proper carrier in a single part. A LSD wouldn't hurt the D35 as bad either if you get a bit heavy-footed offroad compared to a locker.
