I have a '93 ZJ with I6 engine, and 175k miles. The fuel pump was replaced about 20K miles ago. Recently a new problem has developed.
The fuel pump does not pressurize the system when the key is first turned on. If you turn the key to the on position and wait, after a minute or more you hear the fuel pump pressurize the system and the check engine light comes on, at this point the engine will start normally.
Prior to hearing the fuel pump, you can crank the engine but no start up.
The amount of time for the fuel pump to pressurize seems dependant upon temperature. A minute or less in te 70s, below freezing 5 minutes plus or not at all!
I had a neighborhood shop do diagnostics and found nothing wrong with the fuel pump or pressure.
I suspect the engine computer or a sensor.
Any ideas????

You could try running a hot wire to the switch to see if it will pressurize normally (Hook to keyed fuse temporarily.) Then when you turn on the key if it pressurises normally you have a computer issue.. If it still doesnt. Might want to try fuel pressure reg.(It tells the pump when to come on.. Maybe its sticking or something..) This is just a guess.. But if you hook up a wire and it starts to work normally. You could always run it thru a relay and toggle switch and leave it hooked up that way..
But it honestly sounds like some kind of pressure reg problem..
