the nerf bars that you have end up rusting and get banged up while off roading and really don't offer any protection. Most wheelers will have rock rails which can act as a step but is mainly there to protect your body right under the doors from banging up against rocks. I believe Dozerdan makes some for XJ's and he's on this board, you might want to PM him and ask him about his!

My opinion on step bars is pretty neutral. They look good on some longer full size trucks, but I just never liked them on Jeeps. Most of the ones out there are cheap tubing that is poorly made and rusts very quickly. They also don't provide any type of "rock rail" protection on the sides. It also restricts ground clearance of the body because they hang down so far. They do bend easily if you were to damage them off-road.
Other than that its all personal prefference.

Dont sweat it Huey! Use like they are inteded and if you ever beat them up while wheeling, you have a legit excuse to upgrade your bars Wink

I was rolling with a Mopar grille guard for awhile till I got into wheeling and soon realized that the guard isnt for real use, only looks. I later bought a new heavy duty front bumper/guard and now have a front recovery point. You cant know it all when you start so no shame my man

It is a huge learning process and the best way to find out is by asking questions. If I had posted on forums when I first got my jeep, I would have saved myself a lot of money

Read this. http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=1100

I never reccomend step bars. I now have sliders with steps made onto them. I would reccomend A to Z Fabrication, but they don't make sliders for Grocery Getters. Rolling Eyes

I'm sure Dan can hook you up if you contact him. You can always pull your step bars off and sell them fro some money to go towards some sliders.

Dan would be a good bet...but he needs to get his hands on an XJ to make the first set. I know thaty Rocky Road Outfitters makes 'em and I'm pretty sure that Martin over at Rock Lizard Fab makes 'em.
