Hi there - I'm new to the Jeep world - I'd like to get a Cherokee to use for pulling a Hobie Cat (small sailboat) and doing the usual SUV stuff (biking, dogs, camping, fishing, etc.)

I'd like to get a clean (inside and out) rig - what year and model do you reccomend? What are the benefits of a Cherokee Sport?

What should expect to pay for this and what should I be weary of when purchasing?

I don't plan on offroading or rock climbing though I'm sure I'll do a fair amoutn of dirt road and trail driving.

Thanks!

G

I'd go 92-99, mainly because you'll also get a high pinion, non-vacuum disconnect front axle. Finding one with the factory tow package would be nice but not necessary, as you can install a tranny cooler yourself pretty easily.

The 4.0HO in '96 and up models makes a bit more torque (225 vs. 220) at a lower RPM (3K vs. 4K), which would be a good thing since you plan to tow, so that's something else to keep in mind.

Keep an eye on the rear axle. If you're going to concentrate on the model years stated above try and get one with the Chryco 8.25 axle. It's a bit stronger than the D35. Since you don't plan on doing any kind of hardcore wheeling it's not that big a deal...but it's something to watch for.

HTH

Hey thanks, I appreciate the advice!

Were your comments in regards to Cherokees in general or specifically the Cherokee Sport? What is special about the Sport vs limited, vs classic, etc.?

Basically, they are all just trim packages. Low end to high end varied from year to year. For the model years 93-99, stick with a Sport or better. For model year 92 go Cheif or better. Take a gander at this clicky. It'll tell ya all-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-how-stock-Cherokees-came-from-the-factory-but-were-afraid-to-ask. Wink
