I recently purchased a '97 Grand Cherokee V8 after and still own my '93 Grand Cherokee V8. I am shocked at how much worse the gas mileage is on the '97. Down to 300 miles/ tank from 400 miles/tank. The VIN printouts from a Jeep dealer's computer indicate that the only difference is that the '97 has the 2.55 differentials vs 2.72 on the '93, and the wheels went to 16" from 15".

Does anyone have any info on best source to obtain used 2.72 front and rear differentials? Apparently one of the differentials on the '93 is compatible, but it has 275,000 miles on it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

2.55 vs. 2.72 is minimal and should not make that big a difference in MPG. I would guess that something else is causing the fuel difference. One thing to check on the later model V8's from DC is the intake manifold gasket. At the rear of the engine they had a problem with the gasket going south and allowing air directly into the engine....then the ECU took over the lean condition that this caused and enrichended the fuel automatically which caused the V8's suffering from this to burn excessive amounts of gas.

Even tho thousands of vehicles had this condition, DC would only fix it under warrentee if the customer complained about excessive gas use and poor milage.
