The 4wd in my jeep doesn't work at all and I don't know exactly what it is but I have narrowed it down. I know its on the front axle because everything else works fine. The things I think it could be are that the front axle could broken(I don't think so and hopefully not) and there is this weird actuator thing on it that has three hydraulic brake lines running to it. I don't know too much about it otherwise. I cleaned all of the electrical connections that I could get to that went to the 4wd and checked fuses and stuff but I am kinda stumped on this. It's a 1987 cherokee(XJ) and I've only worked on a few little things with jeeps before and never seen anything like it. Anyhelp with this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks Smile

It's most likely the vacuum actuator on the axle. Basically, when you put it in 4WD, the vacuum actuator engages the front axle. It is notorius for giving problems and they stopped using the system circa 1991.

Check the vacuum lines for leaks. If they check out, replace the actuator.

Yep, what he said... Smile

I got lucky when I picked up my 88XJ, someone had swapped it out with a regular axle...
