What does it mean by "Change the Carrier" Confused

I've seen this a few times in magazines, but no one has ever explained it for me...

I'f someone could help me out, or post a link explaining it, I'd appreciate it.

TIA Smile

The carrier is also known as the differential case. It sits inside the axle "pumpkin" on bearings and houses the spider gears (or LSD/Locker) as well as the ring gear. Now, as you go to lower ratio ring and pinion gear sets, the ring gear gets larger. Once it gets to a certain size, it will no longer fit the carrier and thus it must be changed out as well.

As an example, if you have 3.07:1 gears and want to go to 4.10's...the carrier has to be changed because the 4.10 ring gear will not fit on the carrier that the 3.07 gear is on. 3.54:1 is the cut off point.

Make sense?
