This can sortof go in two categories, but since I'm asking for an opinion, I decided to post here in reviews...

What do you guys and ladies think of the Cobra 75WXST CB Radio found here?

I am really leaning towards this model for easy of use with channels, etc. (all functions built right into the mic) and quick, easy storage out of siight to deter theft.

Also what antena would you suggest? I'd like to keep the height at 4ft.

Thanks,
Stephen Smile

took care of it for you!

I went with a cheap cb from radio shack and it works great, well utill it got soaked in a down pour. As far as an antenna goes I have a firestik. Try to find a lot of cb stuff at truck stops, usually cheaper than at most stores.

I have installed a few of those models in cars and truckes before. I love them except for the fact that they are expensive. The hide away brain for it is very small and the power and anteena connects to the brain. I like to mount the brain up behind your glove box where the fuses and things are. That way you keep everything dry and you can run your antenna up into the dash also.

Firestik antennas are very nice and about the same as the big ol whip antennas.

Good choice on the Hide-A-Away CB!!

Thanks for the input, I'm pretty set on this model...another question tho...

Is it worth the money for the external speaker in the pictures on that site? Can you hear the transmissions fine without one? I'd like to get by without buying the speaker.

Thanks again Smile

Well, the speaker on that model is in the handset. Its pretty loud as it is, so I wouldn't waste my time on an external speaker.

The 75WXST is a nice radio...but remember it's the antenna system that makes the most difference in performance. Despite bells and whistles, all radios have the same output power...it's FCC mandated at 4 Watts. A $120 radio and a crappy antenna system will never outperform a $40 radio and a good antenna system.

You're on the right track thinking firestik...it's a good antenna, but don't ignore the coax and the mount. Get high quality RG-58 or RG-8X coax and when you run it, make sure not to kink or twist it and make it one complete run...no cuts/splices. Get a steel mount and make sure it has a good ground. Then buy the radio and have the whole systems SWR tuned.

I went with a 4' Firestik II, Fire-flex RG-58 coax and a stainless steel mount. My SWR is 1.3 at channel 19 and 1.4 at channels 1 and 40.

My $0.02

Steve

I've read your posts and other's posts about the FCC thing, and the main reason that I want the Cobra75WXST is for compactness and the ease of hiding it when I'm not in the Jeep.

I've seen SWRs on eBay going for anywhere from $10 to $75...should I spend the money and always have one? Or is there another way to get an SWR to tune it (i.e. going to a shop, or someone, etc.)

I would spend themoney for one. Hell, I wish I had one. That way if you ever think there is a problem, or if one of your friends has a problem - you can test ut yourself and more than likely fix it for them.

They are good to have around and the one from Radio Shack is around $40 - I think.

Yea, I have the SWR meter from Radio Shack. It's $34 and it works well for my purposes.
