So I already know that I need a new engine and we have discussed that a bit but tonight something strange happened on my way home from work. Heep ( 95 YJ) was up to temp - started before I left cause of the 10 inches of fresh. Get in, in 4hi, turn on lights and go. go less than a mile and I noticed a huge decrease in power and everything dim. Look over at battery guage and it's down just below that solid line between the 9 and 14 - about 11.5 or so, so it was about 10. It usually holds dstrong at around 14. This has never happened before. Couple of minutes later back up to power and no issues. Alternator?
Doesn't matter too too much because I have to get the new engine soon anyway but for my own knowledge what could it be and how long before it causes a real problem. I would like to wait for tax returns and nicer weather before I do the engine swap so that I can have the bike out for trans. Thoughts?

If the voltmeter dropped from 14 volts to just under 12, then back to 14 AND everything dimmed, I'll bet you a six pack of Killians that it's the alternator. I wouldn't wait. If the alternator is not charging properly it's gonna put the strain on your battery which will die a slow horrible death. Besides, you prolly won't get a new alternator with the new engine...they'll most likely just swap in your existing one.

It's the alternator, happened to me for like a month, then POW! It went out on me and I had to push my heep 20 yards up a small incline to the nearest autozone. It's a real simple fix and easy enough to do it yourself.
