My belt needs to be changed on my 2001 Cherokee. Can someone explain how to remove it for a beginner. There is no belt tensioner. Also, are there any suggestions of which brands are better?
Thanks for the help in advance. |

Go to Auto Zone and get a book on your XJ, they are great to have and cover simple to hard things to do. Oil changes, bulbs, belts, etc. Worth the $$$$ That way you can get to know your Jeep _________________ "GODZILLA" More than a Jeep, it's family!! |

It's actually pretty easy. There is a belt tensioner, it's on the idler pulley. That pully sits under the power steering pump. The tension bolt sits close to the water pump pulley on the power steering pump side. First loosen the idler pulley bolt then loosen the belt tensioning bolt until the belt can be removed.
Also, if your removing the fan...it help to loosen those bolts prior to releasing tension on the belt.

This is a thread I started about replacing my water pump. There are links in that thread that show how to remove and relace the serpentine belt.
And for god's sake, take a piece of paper and DRAW the belt and all the pulleys so that you put the next one on right.
Oh, and keep the old one and put it in our off road gear. A half broken belt is better than no belt at all. _________________ But hey, WTF do I know? I kick Hippies for fun.
