Black Krylon fusion paint, it's the best way to go, resists fading a little nicer than stock... Everything else I tried failed miserably. Paint is cheap and easy and can all be done in an afternoon. Plus, when you get the flares off, it gives you a chance to clean behind them.

The Krylon Fusion does work well as lond as you clean the flares real well. If you have used any of the vinyl protectants that may have silicone in it then cleaning about 10 times with denatured alcohol and clean rags for each cleaning is a must. ArmorAll is commonly used on flares as well as some other brands and does contain silicone.

Flexible bumper paint. Comes in a spray can. Flexs with the flares. The only thing that's taken it off my flares was gasoline when I overfilled my tank one day. Let it dry, and it's fine though.

Look here for a write up I did back when I first got my XJ. The "black" bumpers were a nice shade of grey and I had to do something....
So check here

if you dont want to paint them yet... i just used this "Mothers BACK-TO-BLACK" (armor all type product) on my greyed flares and bumper tips and it seems to have worked well. it has lasted about 3 weeks now and they still look good and dark black. the ol' armor-all i was using didn't get them to a real black any longer so i bought the mothers stuff when i saw it on the shelf. good luck.

I got spots on my flares that look like my TJ has flare leprosy (hope I did not offend anyone) and it looks nasty and sick. Why did I get this disease and will it spread like 'leprosy'? How do I prevent it from happening to my other flares?

It's the oils in the plastic drying out. Paint them with flexible bumper paint.

I use the armor all tire foam.
Believe it or not, it brought back my fender flares from grey to black.
I have used it as a polish begone for years whenever that pesky polish gets on them...

there is something called 'Black Satin' its a self-etching trim paint. made just for fading black trim and black plastic... if you can find it. some bodyshops might carry it..
