I know a lot of you use digital cameras, and I am completely lost when it comes to choosing one...

Could anyone give me tips, or pointers in selecting a nice, durable camera? maybe explain some terms, like pixels.

I've googled it, and forums came up, but they were for specific models, and I know nothing about them.

Any help will be appreciated,
Stephen

hmmm... wonder what company I am gonna tell you is best? Give you ONE guess.....

The Nikon Coolpix series come in all shapes and sizes and PRICES.....

Good range of options. Check em out and you can find some good prices out there.

You also can't go wrong with sony or canon. (sony - make sure it has a Zeiss lens on it - heard nightmares of the ones that don't and Zeiss' quality is phenominal)

A few different brands, what about pixels? I'm kind of confused about what they mean, or allow the camera to do.

I use the Olympus C-740 UZ. It's easy to use, takes great pix at 3.1 MPixels with resolutions up to 1600x1200, and it's really gone down in price since I bought mine. I paid like $500 for it when it first came out, and you can get it now for around $250. It uses Smartmedia flash cards (the wafer thin ones), and with a 128 MB card (purchased for about $15 now) I can get 175 pix with it, up to 999 at lowest resolution. Pretty sweet. Very Happy

DEFINITION OF PIXEL: Contraction of picture element. The smallest element that display software can use to create text or graphics. A display resolution described as being 640x480 has 640 pixels across the screen and 480 down the screen, for a total of 307,200 pixels. The higher the number or pixels, the higher the screen resolution. A monochrome pixel can have two values, black or white, and this can be represented by one bit as either zero or one. At the other end of the scale, true color capable for displaying approximately 16.7 million colors, requires 24 bits of information for each pixel.

http://www.angelfire.com/ny3/diGi8tech/PGlossary.html

Basically, what this all means is a pixel is a point of light on a display screen like a monitor or other optical device that the computer uses to paint a color on. The computer gets its palette from the video display system it has built in, such as from a video card, and it uses its palette to produce the colors in a specific pattern that can be anything from a picture, a letter in a word, or an animated object like for video games.

Here is an additional link on how digital cameras actually work...

Hope this helps.

I have the Canon PowerShot A85

I think its either 4.0 or 5.0 megapixels, It is really nice, it is a little complicated, but then again, I never read the book, but I understand it well. IU think the make a A95, that would be awesome.

Look into a canon, they are nice

I have a Sony 5megapixel and love it. It takes awsome pics. The one I have is a little over a year old and was made obsolete about 3x now since it was new, so the actual name wont matter much now. This was @ $500 from Walmart when new.

Other things to concider with digi cams is more memory. Get at least 256k stick. If they offer Pro memory vs. an economy one, get the Pro memory. It makes a ton of difference on pic quality and also download time into your pc.

Another concideration is getting Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Album. I dont like buying from Walmart, but they were way cheaper on these than anywhere else. I bought both together for $100 a year ago. Best Buy and everyone else wanted $119 or more just for the Photoshop 2.0 Suite, and another $45 or more for the Photoshop Album. Both come in real handy when you want to realy get creative with the pics you take.

Steve and I have a Kodak. So far it seems like a nice little camera, but don't drop them either!! We dropped it this past weekend, and now the lense is broken. I called kodak and they gave me the info to the place I need to send it out to get fixed and who only knows how that much will cost.

Umm, I think you mean 256 MB stick... rofl

Don't think you'd get a lot of pix on 256k.
