Hi, I just totaled my 97 Lexus ES300. I loved the car to death, never had any problems. I need something reliable but fun to drive. I was looking at the 98 5.9s. I also am interested in the 5.2s but not as much. I was wondering if this is a well built vehicle? I have been doing some online reading and it seems like the 98 grand cherokee V8s are not reliable at all. I used to have a 89 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I sold it to a friend and it now has 235,000 miles with no major repairs, ever. That is the reliability I am looking for. Thanks

get the straight six...easier on gas and much more reliable and easy to maintain...I.E spark plug changes

well, i bought my 95 gc v8 last spring, and since then, i have had to do a transfer case swap, rebuild the front axle, and now the tranny is acting like its going to give out..... go figure Confused

if i had a chance, id probably go with a straight 6 since i dont have the money (being a student) to pimp it out like some of the guys on here and actually do some serious off roading...

5.2 gets almost the same gas mileage as the 4.0

That is what I had in my 89...straight six 4.0

It was an ok car but I just didn't enjoy driving it.

If the 98 5.9s are not too good, what about 98 5.2s? The gas mileage on the 5.9s was turning me off anyways.

Thanks

I just got a consumer reports used vehicles book. Looks like I shouldn't get a Jeep if I want something really reliable. Thanks for the help.

The engine would be very reliable, but with any 4wd vehicle, there is so many things that could go wrong.

Go buy an electric civic then...trader pissed lol

Any and every type of vehicle will have a lot of good reliable ones that their owners will stand by, then the same model will have a lot of people who want to sell it....

It all depends on how you treat it.....replace the parts at the suggested mileage (i.e. oil, water pump, spark plugs, air filter), use the suggested gas (altho this isn't as serious) you should be fine with any car.

Also look at what the person before you used it for, or did to it.

Don't come on here and say "Oh a book told me this car is crap." That is rarely the case, even if it is a used vehicle.

Find a vehicle, then ask thumbs We'd be able to help you more...With that said, a well-cared for Jeep is an indespensible vehicle...and I've noticed most of those consumer auto books are crap, and for yuppies who aren't willing to do their own research...There have been times where I've bought one, and their ratings were crap.....

So, find one in your local newspaper, and post up about it, but the grand cherokee in general, is really hard to vouch for either way like you are asking

they didnt make grands in 89....first grand came out in 93....yea any 4wd vehicle is going to be a lil bit more difficult to maintain you have more moving parts...but if your goin to "pimp it out" get the 2 wheel drive one...but you said jeeps arent reliable so go get a rice burner or somthing for me and stevo to flex on Finger

I think the 4.0 is one of the most reliable engines made. Mine has 270,000 miles and doesnt smoke or use oil. Still runs good. I admit it doesnt have the power of a V8 but definatly reliable. Kinda like a diesel. and kinda sounds like a diesel too, lol. Suposed to be a piston to head clearance problem when a little carbon builds up on them. But hey I cant complain.
