I recently bought a 87 Cherokee Laredo its got the strait 6 and a AW4 auto transmission. The jeep drives fine until it shifts to third and then it feels like a vibration is coming from the rear. its gots a little better before it shifts into OD but then vibrates like hell again. it also does not vibrate when u let of the gas. Ive replaced the motor and transmission mounts and bought a new driveshaft and ujionts but still did not cure it. I am at a loss and cant figure out what is causing it its completely stock no llift and has brand new balanced tires. Any help would be very appriative.

Since you've got a new driveshaft, ujoints and the tires are in balance, it could be a few things. A warped rotor or drum would cause vibes, but you would feel that more under braking.

Loose t-case output shaft bearings, or loose pinion bearing could also cause it, but worn bearings usually don't have a certain speed when they vibrate. Normally they vibrate all the time, but get worse at certain speeds.

The longshot would be loose bolts on your flex plate. The 4.0 has a resonant frequency in the 2200 - 2400 RPM range. When you hit that range in each gear while accelerating, you feel the vibrations from the loose flex plate. It will be more pronounced in the higher gears though.

You may think I'm stupid for this one but have tried a tune up? Sometimes a miss won't really show up until under a load in a high gear, exspecially in the straight sixes.
