Hi All. New here but looking for some help.

I've got a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4L.

At infrequent times, the engine will hesitate and give the truck a good jolt. It seems to happen right at 50mph. Once it starts, the Check Engine light will come on, it will usually continue, and if I don't keep on the gas, it will sputter and die. When it dies, it wont start for a few minutes. Not even turning over; no click; just turn the key and nothing at all. It also seems to happen more when it's wet (ie raining or just after a car wash). The dealer went over the thing for 2 weeks. The diagnostic for the check engine light pointed to a 'crankshaft sensor', which when tested individually was fine (but replaced anyways after being back to the dealer a couple of times). The computer has also been replaced.

You'll to forgive me a little - my knowledge of cars and engines is pretty basic.

Has anyone experienced this before, or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Does this happen when turning, going up hills, hitting a bump, etc.? If so it could be that the fuel pickup in the tank is positioned badly so when you hit a bump or go up a hill the fuel sloshes away from the pickup.

To me it sounds like it's electrical though...check the harnesses, wires and plugs while the engine is running see if you can make it miss/sputter. Also check the wiring going to the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS). Many times the wire running to that sensor will touch the exhaust manifold and ground out or the insulation could be worn off allowing moisture in (corroding the wire)...either way the CPS controls timing, so if the wiring is bad or shorts out, the ECU (computer) goes crazy and the Jeep will sputter and miss.

HTH

My guess without looking at the symptoms and trying to duplicate them is to check the molex connector between the engine bay harness and the dash harness. Right at the firewall. I would see what the condition of the terminals are and see if he factory anti-moisture grease is still there. It could be that it is corroded and at a certain speed, the vibration is just enought to break the connection at that point.
