Hi I have a 97 wrangler 2.5 sport with 72000 on the clock from new.

Recently I have been having problems with what I thought was the alternator but having installed a new one I'm still having the same problem Shocked . The problem seem worse in the evening/ night than in the morning although having the same conditions (lights on etc)

Problem: On start up the Charger only shows about 9 (the first mark) instead of the middle 14 then once movint it will drop down to zero with the red light to check gauges, so I turn the ignition off then back on (some times 2-3 times) and all is well and normally sees me to my journey's end. In the Evening/night this could take 20-30 times if it works at all.

I fitted a new alternator last week end (as I was assured by the mechanics that this was the cause Crying or Very sad ) but it is no different and so I'm now think it must be an electrical fault, but where, does anyone have any ideas of where to check next.

many thanks

Sounds to me like you may have a draw in the system somehwere. That or you have got a weakening battery. Probably needs replacing. The alternator and battery go hand in hand. If they both arent up to par, then you are goung to have voltage issues.

Do you have any other accessories on the Jeep that may be drawing current from the battery when the key is not on???

Possibly a bad cable(s), too. Sometimes that is overlooked. Just because they look good, doesn't always mean they are. Just something else to consider when troubleshooting this.

Thanks for the suggestions and the only accessories I have added are a Hard Top and Fog Lights.

But the crazy thing is, this does not affect the starting of the engine as the battery seems fine.

ps. I still have about a handful of hair left to pull out. lol

Id try Swapping the battery too if you have a good one on hand.

Also, is the battery in it a Deep Cycle Battery???

If so take it out of your vehicle, put it on a 2 amp charge for 24 hours and try it...

At Last sorted it, it was the ECU at fault but I'm not going to replace it too costly.

The ECU controls the Alternator so I am building a rectifier to bypass the ECU then all will be well....yes yes yes.
