When I start my 95 Cherokee, and change into reverse, it doesn't engage for a while. This appears to only happen if the car is cold.

If I change to drive and back to reverse, it engages immediately.

Does anyone know what the problem and solution may be?

Thanks Smile

You mean cold like below 32* cold? That's fairly common. The ATF in the tranny doesn't flow as well when it's cold and the tranny will take longer to change directions.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to repalce the ATF in your transmission and use some fresh stuff....especially if you have high miles on your Jeep.

Change the filter as well when you change the fluid. A new filter can make a world of difference.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. Tried changing to new filter and oil, and the problem still happens.

When I say it happens when it's cold, it happens when I leave it overnight or for more than a few hours. If I drive it and come back and start it again within an hour or two, no problem. But colder weather definitely makes the problem worse. Colder weather as in 50 degrees, not 32 Smile

My dad mentioned that on automatics sometimes the banding needs adjustment - can this be done on an XJ without a lot of effort? Is it likely this is the issue?

The dealership reckons the seals are hardening and a clutch pack overhaul is required, costing a lot.

What's the best book to buy for info on this area (Haynes manual?)

Thanks,
S

FSMs (Factory Service Manuals) are the best, period. They're usually around 100 bucks apiece, but if you do any semi- serious repairs or mods to your vehicle they're worth their weight in gold.

just wait a few seconds longer before you put it in reverse
