Went out looking to buy me another Chevy truck yesterday. I looked at several. Then I saw this Grand Cherokee with a hitch receiver on the back of it, and a lightbulb went off.
Took it for a test spin.
That was it. Impulse buy.
So now I'm the proud owner of a 2000 GC and don't know jack about 'em.
I've had six Chevy trucks and can field strip and reassemble them blindfolded. But I've never owned a Jeep.
So what needs to be looked at, replaced, repaired, and when?
It has the 4.7 V8, 4x4, and more buttons bells and whistles than I ever thought could exist.
It does have 80K on it, so I'm sure sooner or later it gonna need something, and I'd rather know sooner than later, and would appreciate any help.
thanks.

I would first change the oil and check all your fluids

Yeah, if you don't know the maintenance history of it, at that mileage, I'd go through and change all of the fluids (t-case, transmission, radiator, etc.) Welcome to the site. Wink

Thanks for the replies all.
I spent the weekend getting to know her. I'll be doing a lot of what you all are suggesting over the next couple of weeks. Fisrt thing I have to look at though is the brakes. They work fine but the peddle is sinking a lttle low.
Another thing I'm not sure about, because I've never owned a 4wd, is there seems to be a very slight whine somewhere in the drivetrain at speeds above 60mph. Is this normal, or could I have a problem? It's not very loud at all though.
Another question I have is, what is that little lightbulb thingy right in front of me on my dash?
And on the 4.7 liter engine. How long do things like the water pump, timing chain, and stuff like that last?

Check fluids in both axles and the t-case..

The wine could be low fluid..

At least 75,000 to 100,000

I had 125,000 when I rebuilt. It didnt even need rebuilding but I did it anyway.. Mr. Green

hat thing on the dash is for the automatic headlights I think...

Thanks guys. I'll be underneath my Jeep tonite.
So I take it that's a photocell or something, and it's supposed to turn my headlights on when it get5s dark.
I'll have to check the overhead menu doodad to see if I can make it work. So far they haven't come on by themselves yet.
Thanks a lot. thanks

yea, it's for your headlights im guessing.. either that or it multitasks with the keyless entry in the overhead console...
i have em in mine, as for the lights, on your left of the wheel should be the lights control panel.. one of the settings should be "AUTO" that makes it so your lights come on when it's dark Mr. Green
