You might have a worn out set of piston rings. Did this start happening all of a sudden, or did it just gradually get worse over time?

Check the PVC valve at the back of the engine and follow tubeing to the air filter. That line is known for getting cloged, clean it and put it all back together. Or, just replace it all, should be about $80.

I recently experienced this very same thing....don't bother to wast any more money on it is my oppinion. Mine had a blown side out of a piston. (and scarred walls). motor was worthless even tho it still ran as long as the hood was up and the breather wasn't on it. the next symptim you will have will be the dipstick wanting to blow out all the time (excessive blowby pressure) and oil, and smoke will come out of the tube.

My guess is the PCV and hose. replace that
hell for only $80 it's better than spending $100's on a new engine

but if it's the pisions...ect while your in there swap it out for a 4.0
