I am installing lift shackles on my XJ tomorrow

How difficult is the job. Is there anything special I need to do, This is what I was planning on doing.

1) Jack up, put on jack stands (frame)
2) Support rear axle with jack
3) Remove shackle bolts
4) Replace shackles
5) Jack down
6) Look good

Will it work this way or will it be a major PITA.

Is there any special tools I will need.

i just put a set on an older yj tonight - it was cake. we got lucky and needed no grinder, cutting wheels, sawzalls, or even impact tools. everything broke free and loosened up (with plenty of pre-soaking from pb blaster) for us. not much really in the way of advice other than to soak everything down well ahead of time. good luck!

The only special tool is torque wrench. Make sure you torque those bolts to spec. If memory serves it's 115ft/lbs for the upper bolts and around 75 ft/lbs for the lowers.

OK, I ran into a big problem. If I put the new shackle on, the bottom bolt is going to hit the exhaust pipe.

I dont know what to do, I dont want to mess anything up because this is my DD.

What did you guys do when you put your shackles on, or did everyone get the lucky shackles that fit perfect.

I put a 1 1/2" longer shackle on and ran into the same problem. What I did was bend the rear metal hanger of the exhaust pipe. This will drop the pipe enough to clear the shackle and bolt. If you have a longer shackle than I put on you will have to fab a longer hanger. Any parts store will have exhaust parts.

I'm gonna get a pic for you ...BRB.

edit:
OK, I'm back...I took two pics for you.

Hope this helps. You can see in the first pic that the hanger is almost straight down. Take the hanger off and bend it in a vice with a BFH if need be. The second pic shows I have just enough clearance for the shackle.
