Has anyone tested what kind of mileage they get while driving for a prolonged period of time in 4WD?

side note: I'm getting about 15 highway miles per gallon in reg 2WD. How much better mpg does a 4 banger get?

Thanks

97 TJ with a 4 banger

Pacesetter Header
K&N Air filter
32" tires
5 Speed
15-18 if I keep it around 60 on the highway...

but who can keep it there

Overall average 12-15 MPG

That's funny. Stock vs stock, the 4-cyl is rated at 18/20mpg whereas the 6-cyl is rated at 16/19mpg. The difference is negligible.

I'm sure you didn't buy your jeep for MPG! (Miles Per Gallon)
You bought it for

Yah, honestly I really don't worry much about mileage. It is what it is and there's nothing ya can really do about it. Even with gas pricing entering the obscenely astronomical levels they are. It's a TJ which is as areodynamic as two bricks, most have soft tops which create even more wind drag, most of us lift them and stuff more rolling resistance under the axles (my 35's aren't really pump friendly). There are things that can be done to help a smidgen, but most aren't really worth the cash vested in them. As far as offroad. I don't think I've ever gone much more than 15mph for any stretch of time. Most of the time it's a slow crawling kinda pace, so I don't notice the gauge move much at all. So to answer your question, I don't know Mr. Green .

with our 1998 TJ soft top we got 20MPG on a 760-ish mile highway trip. we have all season 31"s and the lady of the house drives her jeep pretty close to posted limits Rolling Eyes (38.5ish gallons of gas of gas averaged out to about 19.8+ MPG) Wink Smile

arent you asking for trouble running a TJ transfer case in 4WD for long periods? ON-road is what i mean. Rolling Eyes Neutral

and off road how could you ever get an average speed that is worth calculating? Confused
