Anybody know of any worthwhile cheap programs to erase a hard drive? I've got some ancient computers to get rid of. TIA.

put in a start up floppy and type c:

then format c: and there you go erases EVERYTHING so when you turn it on a gain you need the startup disk to install the cd driver and then you can install your operating system

Nah, I've got several years worth or Quicken data that I don't want the local high school kid figuring out when I donate it. Re-formatting won't delete the info - there are too many ways to recover it.

fdisk deletes the partition. I'm pretty sure nothing is recoverable from that unless you're in comp forensics.

You could always get a big magnet.

Just deleting a partition is actually just deleting the directory table of the hard drive. The actual data is still on there in file portions, and those can be hex-read to retrieve crucial data.

The best way to erradicate data is to erase/rewrite/erase the entire thing. There is a freeware program that will do just that. Here is a link to some of the better freeware erradicators out there.

I was reading about being able to recover the data quite easily with the right know-how/software by only formatting. Perfect. thanks

No prob, and some of those programs have levels of rewritability that even GOV'T employees can't retrieve. One of the hardest methods to recover from is the random characters pattern that writes a block of data with randomized keyboard characters (numbers, letters, symbols, ALL CAPS, lower-case, foreign characters, etc...) for each block of empty space on a harddrive. This is of course AFTER doing a full erase and all 1's write to the drive, which effectively writes a "1" on every block on the drive.

The reason for this level of caution is there are some hex-readers that can retrieve partial garbage data from even erased file blocks by pattern-matching pieces of code still left on the drive platter with other pieces, sorta like a jigsaw puzzle. Since all the data is magnetic, traces of the original programs can remain on a platter years after being written and erased, and this is what data-sifters look for. If they can reconstruct even part of a datafile, they can still get enough info for at least 5-20 digits of info, which can be anything from your zip code, SSN, or a credit or debit card number.

This is why if you plan to donate any magnetic media, erase/write/erase/rewrite the mf out of it. That way you'd have to be PSYCHIC to pull the data off then... rofl Set it up for a 12-hour pass and go to bed, in the morning it's all ready to be junked, donated, etc...

How would the magnet work? Any reliability with that? I'm too lazy to set it up and run for 12 hours.

DBan is the shizzy. fo shizzle

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot floppy that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

http://dban.sourceforge.net/faq/

It's what I use when I am reusing old hard drives or when I am giving/selling a hard drive to someone. I believe that it uses DOD level security to wipe the drive so that even those NSA buggers can't pull anything from it.

You could do something physical to the drive like a magnet or #4 buckshot, but I donate any unused computer parts to a guy I know who builds computers for an AIDS foundation.
