Trip Report - GWNF Trail Cleanup Saturday, April 16, 2005...

The following folks attend the Trail Cleanup :

David and Donna Gilmore - YJ
Edward Salas - XJ
Jennifer Leslie - TJ
Julie and Burton Simonds - TJ
Keith Johnson - XJ
Mike Woods - Dodge 1500
Randy Wood - Ford F350
Wayne Lau - TJ

We meet up at the Wendy's in Manasas and headed down to Harrisonburg, VA with 6 vehicles. At the Sheetz in Harrisonburg on Rt.33, David/Donna and Jen were already waiting for us. A couple of other groups showed up as well.. It looked some NOVA Jeepers were there and a Discovery group. The Discovery bumped into us a couple of times while we were at Dry River.

We gased up, grabbed some supplies and headed out. We stopped at a pull-off area about a mile from Kephart to air down. Randy indicated he was getting cramps in his leg and decided to head home. The pull-off area had a Do Not Litter sign. Unfoturnately, it seems some people can't read. After airing down, we cleaned up the pull-off area. While we were cleaning it up, a Forest Ranger stopped by to say hi and thanked us for clean it up. It was nice of him. He also wanted us not to clean up the trash on the other side of Rt.33 because someone had dump it there with their W2's and he was going to have them come back and pick it up.

We started off the clean up of Dry River at the campsite by the stream near the bed of rocks. It was impressive getting the Full Size Dodge 1500 to the campsite. We clean up the campsite and decide to take the steel trash can as well, as it has seen better days. We continued on the trail to another campsite on the other side of the stream. I was even more impressed when Mike wanted to continue on. There were a couple of tight spots, but he made it through without a problem.

Once we finished up the two (2) campsites at Dry River, we broke for lunch on the bed of rocks right on the stream. After lunch we headed over to the campsite at the beginning of Kephart. This area seems like a popular campsite and it showed. We made quick work of cleaning up the site and headed right across Rt. 33 to collect the tires. After collecting the tires, we called it a day as Mike's truck was packed. Once we strapped everything down, Mike, Jen, David/Donna and I headed over to County Landfill to dump the trash. Keith, Edward, and Julie/Burton went on to check out some of trails in Dry River.

We had good success cleaning up three (3) campsites and a pull-off area. We collected over 600 pounds of trash and 10 tires. Thanks for everyone who came for the cleanup.

Later...

- Wayne
