Hey there - I'm a newbie - but I've been looking at Cherokee Sports for quite awhile and finally found one that I wanted to run by you for feedback.

It's a 98 Cherokee Sport 4-door, black, u-haul tow package, sun roof, cloth seats, automatic 6-cylinder, 4x4, 71,589 miles - looks clean inside and out.

Originally a leased vehicle, then sold to a 2nd owner. I'd be the 3rd. It's at a Pontiac dealership now as a trade-in.

Assuming it clears a pre-purchase inspection, they want $7,600 for it.

Any thoughts?

I'm not a very seasoned car-purchaser and I'm wondering if this dealership will allow me to take the Jeep to a Jeep dealership for a pre-purchase inspection - is that normal?

Thanks for your help!

G

Anybody have a thought about this price? I'm supposed to go look at it again tomorrow (Monday). I'm just wondering if that price is good or too high?

Thanks,

G

Well, Kelly Blue Book says retail price of $8260, so I suppose its a good deal. Be sure to thoroughly check it all, just to be sure. As for taking it to another dealership for inspection, I have no clue on that one.

Dear G,
IMHO it sounds like a fair deal, not a great deal. Having not seen the Jeep, can't comment too much, but I like the low miles.

Don't look axnious when you look at it, look for anything you can wrong with it (scratch, etc.) and comment on it. Mention it's got the wrong tires for you. If you're going to pay cash, don't say so, sometimes they like it better if they think you're going to finance, as the make money on that. Be subtle, or you'll look fake.

Lastly make a lower offer ($500 to $1000) lower in an "as is" condition. Leave your number and leave the dealership. Let them chase after you. If you don't hear back you can always go back in the next day. Mess with them, have a little fun, and remember it's not the last Jeep for sale, don't fall in love with it, there will always be another good one that comes along. Good luck, and let us know what happens. Dean.

Thanks Dean, that's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

I'm hoping to have it inspected tomorrow and then I'll make them a lowball offer and like you said, walk out.

A followup - they listed the rig for $8,900 - well above KBB. I went in and pointed out that KBB had it at $7,600. They said they'd sell it for that price.

It was a dealer trade-in which means they likely paid $4,415 for it and I could get the same vehicle from a private party for $5,880. If they agreed to sell it at $7,600 (KBB retail) that still seems too high.

What would you do?

Thanks again,

G

G, I agree with your figures, and good job getting them down that much right off the bat.

I'd proceed under the assumption that a Pontiac dealer doesn't need a Jeep sitting out front. Maybe they would be happy just getting out from under it quickly and moving on.

I'd nose around and be sure they know that this model is really not the one you were looking for, but ask them to work up a no nonsense offer because you're going out day after tomorrow to look at two more.

If you got them down another grand I think you'd be doing pretty good, and and I'd be tempted to take it. If they're over $6500 I'd keep trying to sweat them out. A few weeks can change a salesman's attitude quite a bit!

Psych yourself out before you go, practice what you're going to say, and never commit on the spot, even if you just drive around the block to think for a minute. If they try and pressure you with a now or never offer instantly let them know that works opposite on you and start to leave.

G, you seen pretty smart, I hope you take 'em for a ride! Dean
