I'm considering a Grand Cherokee as a towing vehicle/family car. I've found a 1996 with the V8 but its all-wheel drive, which doesn't seem optimal for towing. I'm unfamiliar with these and thought you could just turn if off so its rear drive, but the dealer said it couldn't be done. If this is false, let me know - he didn't seem very confident.

I'd be towing a track car that would total about 3800lbs with the trailer. Has anyone towed this much weight with a Grand before? It already has a tow package and seemed quite powerful. Very clean inside and out and has under 100k miles. Has a tranny cooler and proper wiring for a trailer. Just not sure about its abilities and if the engine/drivetrain will hold up to the abuse.

right now im custom building a hitch of my own so i can do some towing. I know the problem is not always how much you can tow, but how much you can stop with that load behind you Smile
not sure what the v8 grand can pull.. I guess I will find out myself soon!

Sorry I didnt answer earlier.. The grand came with several different towing packages.. Mine came with the heavy towing package ..Thats electric brake hookup from the factory class IV hitch heavy tranny cooler . It had a tow rating of 7500#..

I think the Class 3 are rated at 5000 and 3500 for class 2..

Most important thing about towing with an auto is keeping the tranny cool.. IF you are going to tow anything make sure you have a good tranny cooler.. If you need help installing one let me know..

Hope that helps..

Carl

It appears to already have a tranny cooler. It sits vertically in front of the radiator. How can you tell what class hookup it has? This one doesn't have any information on it anymore.

The hitch should have a sticker if it says CLass 3 (very likely ) your towing rate is 5000#.

Where do you buy a tranny cooler (order online?) and how much do they typically cost?
I'm going to have to replace my tranny pretty quick as well, what are some options I have in terms of replacements?

Options are pretty limited.. I am putting an old Manual shift in mine but the best thing to do is just replace it..

As for tranny cooler autozone sells them or Jegs or whatever...

Good luck..
