Can someone tell me what they think is going on here?
95 YJ 2.5L 4cyl
Noticed this yesterday. I don't drive her much but wifey and I went out yesterday cause she wanted to go out for a spin with the top off. We did go down some pretty bumpy roads but nothing major and never a problem. No major holes or disturbances - just some bumps on a dirt road.

After that I parked and went inside, an hour or so later I decided to go get a movie. I went out on the motobike and saw a small puddle of fluid on the ground unde the jeep - wasn't there before. Now I park in 1 or 2 spots everyday and there is nothing in the other one (one I left from). I get under and it appears that the leak is from the steering column. Where is connects to the box area.....yeah yeah yeah I know - I'm dumb.
Lacking the mechanical knowledge myself - I took some pictures.
What is it and how do I fix it Very Happy

Oh yeah.....If you can...give me a hand

Finger

Sounds like what mine did when the seals started to go. It only leaked every once in a while. No rhyme or reason unless the fluid heated up significantly (i.e. warm weather, slow speed in the rocks, etc.) I ended up swapping in a Durango box and that fixed the leak. Wink

Well somewhere under that grunge is a blown seal.

I have never worked on one of the Jeep steering boxes but Im gonna guess that it looks like in that last shot, that after poping the steering shaft off, it looks like a flat punch could be used with a hammer to turn off what appears to be a pentagon shaped nut allowing access to the seal.....Im just guessing on that one.

I drove with mine like that for about a year or two - mine would come and go and I'd just keep the fluid topped off. I think the remanufactured gear was about $250, but you could go cheaper by searching boneyards.
