With the 87 models year how can I tell the differance between the NP207 and the NP 233(?) transfer case. I want to replace the speedo gear but there is a cut off between part #.Thanks for the great resource.

On 84-87 XJ's (NP207 t-case) the front shaft is a "GKN" style shaft. On 87-01 XJ's (NP231/242 t-case) the front is a "double cardan" two-piece driveshaft with a CV joint at the transfer case end.

I think its the other way round? My 87 XJ (4.0/5speed) has an NP231 and it has U joints at both ends of its front driveshaft. My 85 XJ (2.5/5 speed) has the NP207 and its got a CV joint at the T-case end.

Also, on the back of the Tcase there is a round tag that will say what the Tcase is. (207,231,232,241,242)
