our Jeep is running like it's only got two and a half cylinders and our local dealer told my wife the "Mother Board" is fried and that is why it's acting that way. Sad they want over $800 Shocked to fix it. i think the dealer was talking about the PCM or ECM board and i looked aroud and some local sources want between $75(used) and $250(new) for a replacement.

so now to my questions...
1) is it difficult or dangerous for a weekend mechanic to attempt this replacement?
2) is there any tricks to to setting or re-setting while replacing the PCM/ECM in a 1998 TJ?
3) anything else i should know?

thanks a bunch!

You should be able to replace it yourself. Just make sure you get the right replacement for your Jeep. Get the right year, engine, tranny, A/C or not, and so on and so on. Unhook your battery and make sure that you are grounded to the computer while you are handling it. Grab a hold of it and keep a hand on it the whole time you are working on it. You should be all right.
