895...

I have a similar question, lets hope Phantum or somebody pops in to give us the truth.

On my '90, I am about to buy lockers, question is this...How do I tell whether or not I have factory limited slip. Open diff lockers are different than limited slip lockers, so I need a foolproof way of knowing before I buy.

The answer may solve your question too 895.

The easiest way to tell if it has a limited slip or not is to pop off the diff cover and look....if you can see spider gears in the carrier (you might have to rotate it a little), it's an open axle.

okay so it might have come with a limited slip from the factory
one thing tho this is the only time i have seen it work when i got stuck in the mud one time i had one rear tire on dry pavement and i think it was in 4lo but not sure it could have been 4 hi but i know it was in 4 and my freind was out side and he said the tire just spun and didnt do any thing could it only show it in 4 lo or would it show it all the time if it was a limited slip??

A limited slip is just that...only some of the power will go to the wheel that needs it. The majority of the power will go to the wheel with no traction. On an open diff, all the power will go to the wheel with no traction.

As far as the wheels spinning fast in 4hi and slow in 4lo, remember...when you're in 4lo you have reduced gearing, so the wheel will spin slowly.

The higher trim packages might have had an LSD as standard equipment (key word, "might"). So if it's a Limited or a Sport (the 2 highest packages for that year), it's a good bet it has one. The only way to really tell is to open it up and look.

Rolling Eyes That's not the best thing you could to do to the drivetrain, but it likely has an LSD.

Check the tag on the axle...it should say "addititive needed" or something along those lines shouldnt it Phantom?

but that would only tell you if it came with the limited slip from the factory it could have been added later

If your going down the highway and going straight for a good while then come to a stop and make a turn does the rear end make a noise? like a grabbing noise?

My rear does that and i have limited slip, its because all the gear oil goes to the back and doesnt slosh to the sides of the pumpkin

keep in mind im talking like a 15min or longer drive on a straight away

It should have a tag on the diff cover, but that one usually only tells you the ratio. Plus a lot of times, that tag doesn't make it back on after the gear oil is changed...especially if a shop does it. My old 8.25 also had a paper tag around one of the axle tubes..that thing lasted long. Rolling Eyes

LSD's should not make noise. When they chatter like that it usually indicates some sort of problem. To little gear oil, contaminated gear oil (usually water), to little friction modifier or worn clutch plates/discs inside the LSD are the most common causes.

jack up the rear axle of your jeep and then spin one tire. if the tire on the other end of that axle spins the same way - full locker. if it spins the opposite way - limited slip. if just sits there like a garden shrub - open differential.

I forgot about that one. The simplest test yet.
