looking to buy a Airaid or K&N intake system. Is one better than the other? Will this really increase fuel efficiency/ HP?

In my personal opinion, both are wasted money.

Neither increase HP where you actually use it. Both brands claim big increases at 5000rpm. Do you drive your Jeep with the engine screaming at 5000 rpm...not likely. The I6 engine builds its best usable power from @1800 to 2800 rpms...both on and off road.

If you find dyno charts from either company look that where the comparison lines are at the 1800/2800 range. Bone stock vs. K&N or Airaid those lines will be ain the same area.....no increase what so ever.

As far as protection goes, both brands use oiled cotton fiber inside pleated aluminum screening. The reason the both allow more air to pass than a pleated paper element is due to the size of the holes that allow air threw. The cotton has larger holes and moves more air....and guess what else....more fine dust and dirt gets threw too. My self included as well as others that post here has seen evidence of the dust inside the airtube and trapped at the TB.....so its getting into the engine.

Please beleive Im a nut about bolt on mods...I love them and look for every reason to buy stuff for my toys. But eventually I learned to avoid the hype or even got bitten in the ass myself by these go-fast magic parts. I learned that the I6 isnt a high reving HP grinder. It was built to do exactly what its needed to do for offroad. That being low rpm hi torque grunt.
