ok..heres a tricky one...by the way.. hello everyone. im new
i have a 94 cherokee 2 door with a/c.
replaced the power steering, water pump, and idler pully.
somewhere along the line, i dont remember where, i developed a squeal. sometimes right away, sometimes after an hour of driving.
if, when its squealing, i put as little as a few drops of water on the belt, the noise stops till the water evaporates, then starts again . now its a new belt,i nstalled somewhere around when i did the water pump. does that sound like a bad belt?
thanx so much,,,its making me nuts.

This may sound a little obvious, but is your belt properly tensioned?

Wow, sounds pretty weird. I don't get the drops of water temperarily fixing the slip/squeal. A defective belt sounds remote, I wonder if something else (power steering pump, etc.) is heating up and pulling a heavier load after an hour or so and causing a slip? In farming we use a spay on product called Belt Grip. It works great, but this will only stop your slip, not what's causing it. Get a can, it lasts for a long time and maybe your symptoms will become more apparent at a later date. It will get rid of your slip. FD.

thanx, i have a can and it just changes the tune of the skweek.
i doubt if its from something heating up, because now it happens on start up, immediatly.
i guess im going to have to bring it to a mechanic, something i hate to do, because thats when it started, when he changed the power steering pump, two days later ther water pump went, so i figured he over tightened the belt and ruined the bearing. so i replaced that and put on a new belt as well.
any other thoughts before i drop more bucks?
thanx.

ok...update....
i went to the store where i bought the belt and idler pulley. i showed him how the belt was only riding on a small part of the pulley, and to make a long story short... i got a new pulley and belt and the noise is gone. dont know which one was the culprit and i dont care. thanx all for the help.

you may think you have it tight enough, but you'd be surprised at far off it could be from proper tension, check it with a tension guage if your not sure.

Wait!

it might not be the belt...

I found one of the pulleys was squeakin on mine.

Put that thin "straw" on your WD40 bottle and shoot where the pulleys connect. Carful not to get it on the belt itself - worked for me - I notice its coming back now after a few months - more so when its humid.

Could the problem have been the belt sitting on the pulley wrong. That was not a question.
