This was copied from consumer reports.com RECALL SECTION.

Is this something I should do?

99-02 Jeep Wrangler, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee

Problem: Debris could accumulate near one of engine cylinders and cause fire under hood.

Models: 1,115,322 sport-utility vehicles, with 4.0-liter engine, made 6/98 to 3/02, including the following: '00-01 Cherokee, '99-02 Grand Cherokee, and '00-02 Wrangler.

What to do:Have dealer install manifold shield to modify the intake and exhaust airflow and to prevent debris from building up near No. 3 cylinder.

I just bought an 02 Wrangler with the 4.0 a couple months ago. I just checked the date code and it's 2/02.
Did they revise the exhaust after thet date and Will I be notified of the recall since I purchased it used?
I wonder if installing a header would resolve this problem?

You can go to jeep.com and enter your Jeep's VIN and it will tell you about any unresolved recalls for your specific vehicle. It will tell you about any recalls specific to your Jeep and it will also tell you whether or not they have been taken care of. I did this with my old YJ and found out about the parking brake recall. I was the 4th owner of the Jeep, and they did if for me for free. Bottom line is, they have to do it, whether you bought it new or used.

Unless you'd like to take your chances with the possibility of an fire under your hood....yes. As stated above, it's free...regardless of whether you are the 1st or 40th owner.

I just checked my VIN, and it says I need the shield installed. Do I just call the local Chrysler Stealership? Or do I contact Jeep directly first? It says you need to take some sort of form showing the mechanics what to do.

Thats the way I read it.
I have heard from several Ford owners, that if you didn't bring the notice you recived in the mail or printed out from the web site, they will not do the repair work.
I'm not sure how picky Chrysler can be.

In the past, I've been able to give the service dept my VIN and the service adviser has been able to look up any outstanding recall work and perform it with no problem. It's worked for Ford, Jeep and Dodge. I've called in advance and also while they've been in for warranty work. Wink

All that I had to do with the YJ was call the dealership to make the appointment, they asked me for the VIN, so I gave it to them, and they made the appointment for a couple days later, so they could have time to get the new P-brake pedal assembly in stock. Then I dropped the Jeep off during my lunch break, and the service manager gave me a ride back to work. Then I had someone drop me off at the dealer after work, gave them my signature, and was on my way. No $ or bulls$!@ involved.
