Hi all
new to this site and new to jeep, got a 1995 cherokee limited 2.5 turbo diesel, presume the lump is of the vm variety there is a rubber plug in the rear diff casing which is making some not so nice sounds there is no diy manual and how do i know which jeep i got , i presume its an xj.
I think the rear axle is lsd and upon inspection of the fluid in it its like pee water so i want to change all drivetrain lubes and i think that may help the horrendous sounds from rear diff they are not there when the units are cold only after a few miles.
Please can anyone point me in the right direction as i think my jeep is great and dont want to part with it if i can help it.

Thanks dmw

What kind of noise is it making? A whine or grinding sound? Are there any vibrations? Is it on acceleration or constant? You can start by going to the troubleshooting part of this to get an idea. And this'll give you an idea on changing the fluid itself. Oh yeah, look for a small metal or aluminum tag on one of the bolts, if it's there, it should tell you if it's limited slip and needs an additive.

If it's a 95, then it's an XJ. If there is no tag on the differential cover, one way to tell if it has limited slip is to put the rear up on jackstands. Then spin one of the rear wheels. If the other one spins in the opposite direction, it has an LSD. If, on the other hand, the other one does nothing it does not have an LSD.
